I found this one to be interesting -- maybe because I've never lived on a farm, and I've always wondered what it would be like. I appreciated the variety of viewpoints, comments from all family members, and I also appreciated the author's note at the beginning stating that the books isn't about the "typical" farm (if there is such a thing), just one family's experience of farm life.
Felt like I knew this people. I think it is a much needed addition to informational literature. As for the mock award, I think the reader would have been better served if people mentioned might have been explained parenthetically as to the relationship. Granted, I'm plenty familiar with conversations where people I don't know are mentioned. I just don't care for it in a book when I can't say to them, "WHO?"
I loved this book, and I think it would be great for the award! I also live on a farm in Ohio, but I do not live on a "working farm" ( a farm with animals, etc.). At times I felt that the family's descriptions were a little too long. Even though I live on a farm I found myself saying, "Oh, that's why we do that."
This would be a great book for elementary students. It's not difficult to read because it's written more like dialogue. It's a great book for students to learn how much time and effort goes into farm work.
