Planting the Trees of Kenya: The Story of Wangari Maathai
What a lovely book! Beautiful illustrations extend the text in a way to bring the work of Wangari Maathai to a level to which children (and adults!) can relate. This is a great example of why I enjoy reading children's non-fiction.
I really liked all aspects of this book. The illustrations were beautiful, the story was engaging, and it was told in a way that is interesting and unique. I had not heard the story of Wangari Maathai before, and this book was a great first experience with her story. It's a great example to kids of how if you see a problem, it is possible for you to step up and make a difference.
We're excited about all the new informational books for kids that will be published in 2011 and we look foward to highlighting some of the best here. Children's librarians at the Allen County Public Library sometimes receive Advance Reading Copies and other free books from a variety of publishers. After reading, some of these books find their way onto this blog before being added to the permanent Library collection or given as gifts to the participants in our book programs.
